Discovery Academy Sparks Interest in Learning
Discovery Academy, an after-school enrichment program, has enjoyed a successful start to its fall semester. The program, provided by the Johnson City Library in cooperation with the school district, is staffed by six teachers and supported by numerous volunteers. Each Tuesday and Thursday after school, 40 enthusiastic 3rd and 4th graders arrive to explore the world of science. At the first session, students described and illustrated a typical scientist, comparing and evaluating class stereotypes. A surprise visitor, Albert Einstein, was both entertaining and informational as he taught about his own life as a scientist. Throughout the fall sessions, other scientists continue to visit the class. Rachel Carson taught the students how one person could make a difference in protecting our earth from harmful substances. Nobel prize winner Marie Curie revealed the passion that leads a scientist in a lifelong pursuit of new discoveries. The dramatic presentations are performed by teacher Maggie Goodman in a style that both informs and entertains.
In the first unit of study the students explored
the invention process considering how ideas are born. Each student then used an
array of available materials to create their own invention. The students are
currently exploring the amazing world of matter. They have experimented with
mystery powders and liquids, observing chemical reactions. The creation of
slime revealed a substance that exhibited qualities of both a solid and a
liquid. As the semester continues to its end point on December 13th the students will study the qualities and
properties of light and end with a unit on engineering.
