>
A Thousand
Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini Born a generation apart in war torn
Afghanistan and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and
Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As
they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in
the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and
mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not
just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power
and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman's love for her family can move her to
shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or
even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.
Rescheduled from Thursday, Oct 25th

A book discussion night for our August "Johnson City Reads" book will be
held at Chantilly Lace at 7pm. Dessert and coffee will be served at this
event. Please join us for a lively discussion of the mystery novel
"Promise Me" by Harlan Coben.
"Johnson City Reads" Book
for the Month: August will be "Promise Me" by Harlan Coben. This
psychological thriller is a New York Times best seller and Mr. Coben's latest
release. Please be looking in the paper for a review of this novel. "Promise Me"
will be available at the Library for a cost of $5 later next week.
The
Library has seven, now
eight titles from Harlan Coben; and this may well be the best. In true
Coben fashion, the good guys are not all good, nor the bad all they appear to
be. Furthermore, there’s no sense reading the ending first---you can’t
figure it out. All you know is, when you start, allow yourself a few hours of
leisure, for you won’t put it down. Is Myron Bolitar a good guy? You
will spend enough time with him to judge. It’s 487 pages of suspense,
intrigue, clarity and obfuscation. High school, hospitals, police, parents,
teenagers, weirdo’s, romance, suspense, the story takes more turns than a
barrel racer at the Blanco County Fair; yet it is tightly woven. Set post
9/11 in a New Jersey High School and its neighborhoods, the fast-paced tale
reaches a very believable, almost understandable ending. And stops,
completely unexpectedly. You’ll enjoy it!
Week of August 27th: Come to the Library to pick up a registration form for the new Discovery Academy program which will provide after-school enrichment in the areas of math and science to 3rd and 4th graders from 3:30pm to 5:15pm. Sat, May 5, JC Library Book Signing: @ 2p-5p at the JC Library. Texas author Suzanne Morris will talk about the writing of the CLEARHARBOUR TRILOGY, her latest work of fiction. Set in England and the United States between 1914 and 1962, the CLEARHARBOUR TRILOGY is one continuous story with many intriguing twists and turns as the plot unfolds over four decades and two world wars. LOOK BACK WITH LONGING, the first volume, is the story of Geneva Sterling and Tony Selby, two talented dancers who team up on the vaudeville stage in WWI. The pair seemed destined for success, yet both have made mistakes in the past that threaten to destroy both their stage career and their personal lives. ELIZABETH'S LEGACY, the second volume, carries the story through love, loss and political intrigue in WWII. Suzanne Morris's first novel GALVESTON was published to wide acclaim in 1976, and was followed by KEEPING SECRETS (1979), SKYCHILD (1981), and WIVES AND MISTRESSES (1986). Copies of the first two volumes of the trilogy will be available for sale during the event. Her presentation will begin at 2p, and will include time for answering questions from the audience.
