Mapping Your Future - Planning a Career section has ten steps to help you through the process. Easy to follow with plenty of detail, reference material, and samples. Links to other sites for those looking for college information or technical training.
U.S.News.edu - college personality quiz, college search, community college search, compare colleges, application organizer, grade calculator, course scheduler, study abroad search, scholarship search, and an advisor forum all in one place.  Some of the functions are very detailed and will take some time for best results but you will be better informed about what to expect if you put in the effort.  Register for My.edu and you can save the results of your college searches, comparison work sheets, and individual school profiles to come back to later.  My.edu is a personalized feature that will also keep you up to date on new articles, tools, and other U.S. News Online features that help you to find the right school.  There is also a comprehensive index of expert advice on navigating the admissions process, check it out for practical, been-there advice.

Skill Sets
Occupational Outlook Handbook - from the U.S. Department of Labor is a nationally recognized source of career information, designed to provide valuable assistance to individuals making decisions about their future work lives.  Revised every two years, the Handbook describes what workers do on the job, working conditions, the training and education needed, earnings, and expected job prospects in a wide range of occupations. Printing of information about individual occupations is best done using the PDF files that are provided. There is alos information about ordering a printed version of the entire Handbook.
Career Guide - Career Search - provided by the Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board of the State of Washington.  It includes an online self-assessment tool designed to help you determine your interests and aptitudes.  Using this self-assessment will help you to focus on occupations that are right for you.  Included in this section are descriptions of more than 330 occupations (arranged in six clusters of pathways, Arts, Business Contact, Business Operations, Science, Social Services, and Technology) along with wage data and employment outlook.  The site philosophy "Many people get discouraged, not because they have set unrealistic goals for themselves, but because they haven't explored all the possibilities to help them reach these goals" is reflected in the depth of the information offered. The section on Non Traditional Employment addresses vocational equality.
Career Development Manual - from the University of Waterloo in California. You are in charge of your own career. Managing it will be a lifelong process. Discover your place in the world where you will be able to enjoy a high level of wellness. Choose work that will be compatible with your own unique skills, knowledge, personality, and interests. Define the balance that you would like to have with your work, finances, health, and relationships with family, friends and colleagues. Be proactive! Don't just react to whatever chance or luck brings your way.

Your Personality Style
The Next Step Magazine - site "for high school students who want more" includes information on career exploration, college preparation, college profiles, financial aid, and more. Site has feature articles, career exploration, teen editorials, college preparation, cool links, life skills, teen bookstore, and different avenues. A variety of topics, some education related and some not.

Campus News
Planet Alumni - Planet Alumni is a registry-based site that was designed to help alumni find each other and keep in touch.  It has become an online community where current students and alumni of high schools, universities, and Greek organizations can reconnect with old friends, make new friends, share memories, plan reunions, network with other alumni, and show their school spirit.  The site is free to members and offers an array of resources to make keeping in touch easy and fun. Those features include member directories, message boards, real-time chats, photo albums, event calendars, reunion planners and more. Planet Alumni can also be used to keep up with campus news, learn about alumni association activities, register and pay for class reunion tickets, and buy official school merchandise.
Web U.S. Community Colleges by State - UT Austin Web Central lists all regionally-accredited community colleges in the U.S. and provides links to those with a Web presence.  (Please note: this list includes 2-year institutions and 2-year branch campuses of 4-year institutions, but not 4-year institutions offering associate degrees.
Web U.S. Universities by State - UT Austin Web Central contains a list of regionally-accredited U.S. universities organized by state.  This list includes only 4-year institutions.  Only one server is listed for each campus: the primary central server.  In the absence of a central server, another server may be selected.

College Bound
The College Board - SAT headquarters for students, parents, and counselors.  Register for the SAT,  prepare for the SAT,  get dates and deadlines, and  register online for college,  all free and up to date.  The SAT Learning Center offers practice tests and tutorials.
University of Phoenix Online - was formed in 1989 and currently enrolls degree-seeking adult students from all over the U.S. and the world.  The Online program uses the power of the Internet to deliver online learning that is independent of time and location.  Rather than gathering in a classroom, students and instructors interact online or offline in a forum using Microsoft® technology.  Classes are offered one at a time, in sequence.  There are no semesters, so students can begin a course of study any month of the year.  A student can concentrate on one subject at a time, and when a class is completed he or she can move on to the next one until all degree requirements are met.  While this flexibility is unprecedented, it requires greater than average discipline and does not allow a student to "coast."  Students devote an average of fifteen to twenty hours a week to their studies.
SuperCollege.com - College Matchmaker, Super Scholarship Search, Loan Comparison Machine, Admissions and Tests online. Lots of freebies plus SuperCollege is also the publisher of several award winning books about college and scholarships.
TG Works Online - Created by the Texas Legislature in 1979, the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation (TG) is a public, nonprofit Corporation that administers the Federal Family Education Loan Program (formerly known as the Guaranteed Student Loan Program) in Texas. Great information for students, parents, and educators about their programs.
wiredscholarfinancing your education covers preparing,  selecting,  applying,  paying, and deciding.  Some schools support online student loan applications.  Features include Learning the Loan Process,  Choosing a Lender,  Borrowing Responsibly,  Applying for Loans,  Alternative Loans,  Entrance Counseling, and  Repaying Loans.  Tools include a glossary,  financial calculators,  and checklists to help you plan interviews,  visits,  and keep track of deadlines.  Wiredscholar meets the needs of college-bound students by providing a comprehensive online resource for information about going to college that they can access with their families.  All of the college-preparation information you might ever need is here in one location.
World Lecture Hall - publishes links to pages created by faculty worldwide who are using the Web to deliver course materials in any language.  WLH does not administer the courses they link to.  If you want to know more about a specific course you should use the contact information published at that particular course Web site.  This University of Texas at Austin website has received many awards, commendations, and rave reviews.

JC Community Educational Foundation: Joe Ginn, 868-0873. The JCCEF will be a resource for continuing education for students by providing scholarship and for teachers by awarding grants that encourage new and expanded approaches to educations.  Donated funds are used for student scholarships and teacher grants for JCISD.
www.dontmesswithtexas.org: Don't Mess With Texas Scholarship: Have you heard that Real Texans Don't Litter? Prove it and you might pocket big bucks for college tuition. The 2007 Don't Mess with Texas Scholarship will award one $3,000 and two $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors who have made a difference in keeping their schools and communities clean. You can download the forms needed to apply by going to this web site. Please read all of the information carefully. Then prepare an essay of 300 to 350 words (that's less than a page) explaining how you have helped combat litter in your community. Be sure to state the problem and explain how you initiated or became involved in a creative and sustainable solution. After writing your essay, you'll need to include one letter of recommendation from a school source and one from a non-school source with your application. Have your sources place their letters in an envelope and sign their names across the seal. Compile and submit your completed application, essay and letters of recommendation in an envelope by April 6.
www.federalstudentaid.ed.gov: Dept of Education FAFSA4caster, to determine eligibility for federal aid, including Pell Grants. The Free Application for Student Aid (Falsa) is the starting point for most loans, grants and scholarships, even state and private offerings. The Fafsa cannot be submitted until Jan 1 of the year you plan to attend college, but this web site has a calculator to help you determine your eligibility.  Web site also has a search engine to find scholarships and a tutorial on the financial aid process.
Hill Country Cattle Women Scholarships:
Two scholarships will be awarded to either an agriculture or dietary nutrition-related major.  Additional scholarships are open to any major. Applicants should have 60 college hours or more and be a college level junior or above, with a 3.0 GPA. Applications available from Emy Jo Miller at 325-247-4502 or johannasplace@ctesc.net. Farm Safety Just 4 Kids - Their mission is to promote a safe farm environment to prevent health hazards, injuries, and fatalities to children and youth. There are on-line fact sheets on important safety issues for use by educators.
Small Farm Resource - the site is a cooperative effort created to help disseminate information of use to people with small farms or rural property. Phenology Models Database - from the University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Project. Phenology models predict the time of events in an organism's development. A model is included in the database if it uses weather, host and/or pathogen data to predict risk of pest or disease outbreak.

BBC Online Education - Get Equipped for Life!  The British Broadcasting Company offers a free education program. Learn Spanish, French, German, Italian, English, History, and/or Nature. There are resources for adult, primary, and secondary education levels.
Between the Lions - weekly sets of related reading activities from PBS for home, literacy workshops, home school, and classroom. The subject matter targets the 4-7 year level but is useful for literacy development for all beginners. Lesson plans and materials are to be presented to the reader by a mentor, teacher, caregiver, friend, or older sibling.
Camp Rena - Recreation Leadership Resources - the ultimate collection of recreation basics for children. Some are free, others modestly priced, content rich and worth a look.

Jigsaw Classroom - a cooperative learning technique that reduces racial conflict among school children, promotes better learning, improves student motivation, and increases enjoyment of the learning experience. The jigsaw technique was first developed in the early 1970s by Elliot Aronson and his students at the University of Texas and the University of California. Nature Serve Source for authoritative conservation information on more than 50,000 plants, animals, and ecological communities of the United States and Canada.  You can easily search NatureServe to find: scientific and common names, conservation status, distribution maps and life histories, and conservation needs.
Texas Center for Policy Studies - offers a wealth of easy-to-understand, current information on the environment in Texas and in your local community.  Get an explanation of key issues, and access a wide variety of on-line environmental data and maps.  Quite interesting, especially if you are curious about the water situation.
South Central Partnership for Environmental Technology Education - SC PETE is dedicated to providing leadership in environmental education and training through community and technical college partnerships with business, industry, government, and other education providers. They have a catalogue of books, videos, software, and other instructional materials including Garbage the Game. The ATEEC Fellows program that is funded through the National Science Foundation and held each year in partnership with University of Northern Iowa is only one of their offerings.

ALFY Shield is a downloadable, free, filtering software to protect kids from coming into contact with inappropriate content. City of Austin - Green Gardening Plant List - a gardener's ultimate spreadsheet of Central Texas native and adapted landscape plants indexed by type of plant, cross-referenced by water, light, and soil requirements, deer resistance, special features, etc. Paper copies of this list printed on heavy glossy paper and in color are available at participating nurseries. America Quilts - a PBS presentation that explores the history, art and personal stories of quilt-making in America.  Resources includes great links to museums, magazines, exhibits, supplies and individual quilter's sites.
Crochet Musings - International and all about crochet. Features include the Chains of  Thought newsletter,  tutorial,  free patterns,  designer spotlight,  poetry,  recipes,  and pictures of member's afghan creations. The chat site, CastleNet, is hosted in Australia and may be a bit slow in loading (as are the patterns).  Charity work involves creating squares or assembling them for special projects around the world.
Free Knitting Pattern Knit Ring - A netring links web sites that have a similar theme, this one being free knitting patterns. Each website displays a netring link on their page which allows visitors to link directly to other pages with the same topic; easier to follow than a search engine. Some of the sites are more commercial and some are more personal, all in this ring have at least one free pattern

Audiovisual Library - The Texas Department of Health Audiovisual Library has a collection that circulates throughout Texas on a free short-term loan basis. It includes a variety of health and safety topics for general audiences with materials for preschool through adult groups and a few professional level materials. Most audiovisuals are in English, some are in Spanish and others are bilingual, English and Spanish on the same tape. There is no charge for Texas residents to borrow from the library except for return shipping charges.
Bartleby.com - is probably the most comprehensive reference publisher on the Web. Signing - American Sign Language
American Sign Language- ASL Browser from Michigan State University. The media player is very slow loading for each sign, just be patient. The facility shows the word in motion and it may be repeated as often as desired by pushing the button. There is also a slow motion option.
Animated ASL Dictionary - a basic introduction to signing that uses small black and white pictures in order to make download time shorter. Animated hands present the sign four times at a moderate rate of speed. There is a frames/no-frames option for those who need it.
ASL Fingerspelling An ASL Fingerspelling Dictionary with animations and an ASL Fingerspelling Converter in which you can type a word that the converter then converts into sign language.
